Michael Whitaker Smith was born October 7, 1957 in Kenova, West Virginia. He moved to Nashville in his early twenties and became a session musician and songwriter before launching a solo career. His 1991 album Go West Young Man included 'Place in This World,' which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. He has released over 30 albums, sold 15 million records worldwide, and won 45 Dove Awards and three Grammy Awards. He is known equally for pop hits and intimate worship albums including Worship (2001) and Healing Rain (2004).
